Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Future Funding of Domestic Water Services

Irish Water and Commission for Energy Regulation

2:00 pm

Mr. Michael McNicholas:

We were given responsibility for the phase 1 metering programme, which involved installation of approximately 1 million devices. We have completed that programme, with 870,000 meters installed. The remaining 200,000 plus installations are technically complex and, therefore, we do not believe we will install them in this phase. As I said, the phase 1 metering programme is complete. We have no contractual or material obligations to any contractor or any cost associated with anything beyond that. No contract was given for any committed amount of work. Contractors were paid only for work done. We had no obligation to give them work and, therefore, we have no wind-up costs associated with regard to phase 1 metering. My colleague, Mr. Grant, will respond to the Deputy's question on the cost of each meter installed.
