Economic Impact of Brexit: Discussion (Resumed)

11:00 am

Mr. Máirtín Ó Muilleoir:

The Financial Timesnoted the day after the Brexit vote that a million mad questions had now arisen. There are probably 20 million mad questions arising today and I would not rule out any eventuality in the time ahead. We were told there would be no transition but that now seems to be on the table. We were told there would be no special deal for financial services but such a deal is now being discussed. We were told there would be no special arrangement for Sunderland and the motor industry; that, too, is now under discussion. We do not know what the outcome of the legal challenges to Brexit will be. The English and Welsh gave the British Government a democratic mandate to leave Europe and I would not stand in the way of it for a minute. However, we in Northern Ireland, along with our Celtic cousins in Scotland, voted to stay.
