Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health

General Scheme of Misuse of Drugs (Supervised Injecting Facilities) Bill 2016: Discussion

1:30 pm

Mr. John O'Driscoll:

That will depend on the legislation that is enacted. It is clearly recognised that amendments are required to the Misuse of Drugs Acts. We have heard that provision will be made for An Garda Síochána, for example, to enter a premises. That will assist in policing those proposed facilities but until we see the exact nature of the legislation, we cannot be sure how it will operate. Clearly, we are used to dealing with drug addicts in particular scenarios for many years. We have drug treatment facilities operating within districts where drug misuse is prevalent. I think most people would agree that we afford the drug addict the attention and concern that people who find themselves in that difficult situation should be afforded and that our efforts in tackling drugs is focused mainly on the sale of drugs and those who have visited this horrific situation upon the addicts, those people who make money out of the business of drugs.
