Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health

Charities Regulatory Authority

2:00 pm

Mr. John Farrelly:

I am sure people might not agree with everything the regulator does. In my life as a regulator, one very rarely has a time when everyone agrees with everything one does. With regard to the area of "contested space", the world is evolving and we have certain charitable purposes set out in the Act within which there are about ten or 11 quite broad definitions. I believe that is good because it allows charities to press on and not get hemmed in. When I say "contested space" I mean that if we believe something is happening which may undermine trust and confidence in the charitable sector as a whole, we will act.
