Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health

Charities Regulatory Authority

2:00 pm

Mr. John Farrelly:

We do not do complaints. There is no provision for complaints in the Charities Act and, believe it or not, that is a good thing. The sector is well capable of doing that and there are some really good people who have complaints processes. It is part of the regulations to make sure those processes are in place. However, we do take on concerns as unsolicited information. If we believe a registered charity is in non-compliant with the Charities Act, we will start pulling that thread and making sure it comes back into compliance. It is a contested space and I am happy it is such because that is democracy.
