Committee of Inquiry into the Banking Crisis
Nexus Phase
Mr. Brian Cowen:
Well, I mean, the Central Bank were looking at these ... we were looking to see would it be possible to do it. I mean, you wouldn't say you're not ... it doesn't mean you're not going to try it if you think it's the right thing to do and if it's ... if everyone's on the same page. So, I mean, it's back to this contingency planning again. But the issue was, as far as I could see, that for so long as we were out there looking for financing on open markets, the question of burning bondholders from the position we were in was a very difficult proposition. Once we came out of the markets, once we were talking about going into a programme, where we had three-year money in prospect and a sort of a fiscal framework where you could plan your way through the next three years, I wasn't that worried about, you know, the bond market because we wouldn't be in the bond market for three years anyway if that was the case.
