Committee of Inquiry into the Banking Crisis
Nexus Phase
Mr. Brian Goggin:
Well, I mean, your articulation of the numbers are statement of fact. Bank of Ireland was very comfortable pursuing a strategy where half of its risk assets were in residential mortgages. We deemed that form of lending to be an extremely safe form of lending. And, you know, there's nothing wrong with property lending. The question is: how diversified is your risk and how good is your underwriting? But, look, we know that in the final analysis it was a segment of the property and construction, i.e., the land bank section ... segment, where the main difficulty arose.
