Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform
Overview of the Banking Sector in Ireland: Allied Irish Banks
2:00 pm
Mr. David Duffy:
It is defined very simply. It is governed by a shareholder agreement, which creates independence for the bank in all commercial decisions. That responsibility and those commercial decisions are the responsibility of the board of AIB. Therefore, we engage with the Department of Finance, our shareholder, as with any shareholder, on all matters concerning the performance of the business but we make and have made all the decisions on commercial issues, including mortgages, increases and decreases, and the branch closures in the past, at board level in AIB and independently of our shareholder. That is what the shareholder agreement defines as the operating model.
