Intellectual Disability and Ageing: Discussion

9:30 am

Ms Eilish Burke:

My study is in the area of osteoporosis. I engaged people in the field in the health assessment. I advocate making health promotion accessible, readily available and easily understandable for people with an intellectual disability. They are capable of engaging in these types of assessment, but for the diagnosis of osteoporosis, for example, the DEXA scan is used. I used a quantitative heel ultrasound, which was like a foot spa, with which people were familiar, so it was a quick and easy assessment to do and it suited people with intellectual disability. In ensuring that their health is promoted, it is important health promotion itself is made accessible for people with intellectual disability.
