The medium-term review published by the ESRI in 2008 stated, among other things, "the fundamentals of the Irish economy are sound". From Professor John FitzGerald's evidence to this inquiry we know the ESRI had done no research on the financial sector for a number of years. Can an economist ever say the fundamentals of an economy are sound without examining the financial sector?
