The committee should look at the Lehman decision by itself. Preceding it was the rescue of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, vast government-sponsored mortgage lending enterprises. Then, two days after the Government let Lehman go into bankruptcy, it rescued American International Group, AIG, which was not even covered formally by the safety net. I call that a double U-turn in policy. It was extremely upsetting to the public in that it suggested the officials did not know what they were doing at that critical time.
