The advantage of the credit union movement with regard to commercial lending has meant that it was not involved in the creation of the banking crisis. If the owner of a corner shop is looking for €5,000 to paint and do up his business, a member of the credit committee who attends the monthly meeting might say they gave that guy €5,000 four months ago and they do not see any sign of a paint job on the front of the business. The advantage of local engagement is that the risk is maintained and the loan is managed in that way. That is why the governance can work so well.
