Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform

Budget 2015: Department of Finance

3:45 pm

Mr. John McCarthy:

We deal separately with what we refer to as core machinery equipment. This is because there is a very volatile element included in machinery and equipment called purchases of aircraft, which can distort things. We prefer to look at the core to get an idea of what is happening on an underlying basis. It also does not really affect the GDP figures because all aircraft are imported; therefore, it does not affect aggregate demand in the short term, which we expect to increase by 30% this year. The figures which are very strong have been running at about 40% in the past 18 months. The economic interpretation is that we have had years of under-investment relative to GDP.
