Public Accounts Committee

2012 Annual Report of the Comptroller General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 27 - International Co-operation
Vote 28 - Foreign Affairs and Trade
Chapter 13 - Official Development Assistance

1:00 pm

Mr. David Cooney:

I will follow up on it. I want to make it clear there is absolutely no objection from the Department to doing this. I wish Enterprise Ireland did have a representative in Taipei. The office there is a European Commission office. The European Commission has responsibility for trade in the European Union and it is entirely appropriate. I suspect the people coming through are trade attaches for these other countries. We do not have a system of trade attaches. This work is done by Enterprise Ireland and the IDA. It is really about who might do it. We have taken responsibility for trade promotion, but in the way it works we have not taken on responsibility for the agencies.
