Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform

Local Property Tax: Discussion with Revenue

4:45 pm

Ms Josephine Feehily:

The short answer is that we did not do the kind of analysis the Senator is describing because the half year was unusual. It would not have been valid to draw conclusions on the basis of a half year. Already this year we are seeing - to the extent that we did analysis but not the type the Senator is talking about - that people want to shift to a different payment method because the tax has effectively been doubled. That is what we are seeing in the payment methods of the 200,000 returns that we have already secured this year. The time for that analysis is when we have a proper, full filing season. Then we can determine the profile of amounts paid and payment method chosen as well as demographics and payment method chosen.
