Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform
Local Property Tax: Discussion with Revenue
4:35 pm
Ms Josephine Feehily:
The Deputy mentioned cheques. People do not seem to understand that their banking details are along the bottom of the cheque. That is why I wonder why people would choose to pay by cheque, as it costs money. It costs them stamp duty and a transaction fee, whereas a single debit authority, which shows exactly the same information - there is a sort code on the bottom of the cheque - is much cheaper and is more secure. We do not keep people's bank account details at all. We simply exercise the mandate and then the bank account details are destroyed.
