Bank Charges: Discussion with Central Bank and ISME
4:10 pm
Mr. Mark Fielding:
It is quite prevalent. The banks get very upset over contractors lodging money into another bank account but they are trying to protect subcontractors, which is something we back. Legislation going through the Houses is being dragged back. Members know more than me about why that is. I would like to see it in place. It goes back to the issue of prompt payments, where small businesses are being crucified. It has nothing to do with banks in this case. It concerns the abuse of a dominant position by larger businesses who will not pay on time. It is a major issue, the third most contentious issue small businesses are dealing with on top of economic uncertainty.
