On the Deputy's question about women who may not face constraints arising from poverty, the people who came before the joint committee in December made clear that the number of women who sell sex and do not experience coercion, whether physical or arising from poverty, is small and not sufficiently large to satisfy the market. As the research showed, the majority of those engaged in the sex industry have been forced into the industry, have experienced harm and more than 90% of them would like to exit prostitution.
