The Supreme Court has stated there must be a real and substantial threat to the life of the mother. Is there any quantification of what this comprises in order to achieve a termination?
The master of the National Maternity Hospital indicated yesterday that medicine and treatment operate on the basis of probabilities. The psychiatrists who came before us yesterday also indicated that typically 3% of those who are diagnosed as being at risk of suicide actually die by suicide. Would a 3% confidence level in respect of the identification of actual suicides be sufficient to ensure that a real and substantial threat to a mother's life would be taken into account?
