I too am honoured to have witnessed the fascinating exchange here today. The Supreme Court decision in the X case stated that there must be a real and substantial threat to the mother's life before an abortion would be permitted. Is there any quantification of what that threat comprises? We heard evidence yesterday, for instance, that out of 100 predicted suicides, typically three will actually occur. Would that level of prediction equate to a real and substantial threat in the circumstances we are discussing?

Professor Binchy mentioned that there may be gaps in the Supreme Court judgment. Does this make it more likely that if the issue comes before the court again in the future, whatever legislation is introduced might be deemed unconstitutional? How were the gaps in the ruling allowed to happen? Was it the case that the Attorney General did not request the necessary psychiatric evidence at the time?
