I would like to repeat some of the questions I asked Professor Binchy already. I thank Mrs. Justice McGuinness for her replies. Professor Binchy suggested that further extensions have followed when most other countries have changed their abortion laws. I made the point that the Irish people would surely be the bulwark in such circumstances. No constitutional change whatsoever is proposed. No such change can occur unless the Irish people give their express consent to it. I have to say that no evidence has come before these hearings in support of the suggestion that we will see a very different situation in the shape of a deterioration in the acknowledged high standards within our maternity units. There is nothing to suggest that we cannot look forward to being able to continue to trust in all circumstances those who are responsible for overseeing and directly providing services to pregnant women.
