221. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if there will be an extension to the National Transport Authority’s rules compelling taxi drivers to replace their cars after either 10 or 15 years in view of the current crisis facing the taxi sector and the fact that many drivers will be unable to afford to purchase a new vehicle; and if not, if there be will supports for taxi drivers that have to purchase a new vehicle. The regulation of the small public service vehicle (SPSV) industry, including SPSV licensing, is a matter for the National Transport Authority (NTA) under the provisions of the Taxi Regulation Act 2013.
Given the role of the NTA as regulator, I have referred your question to the Authority for direct reply to you. Please advise my private office if you do not receive a response within 10 working days.
