78. To ask the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht the number of prosecutions that have been achieved by An Garda Síochána or by the National Parks and Wildlife Service relating to other fires that were lit in 2016 and since 2012 in view of the fact that only one application was made for controlled burning in 2016. Since 2007, the National Parks and Wildlife Service of my Department has taken some eleven prosecution cases for breaches of Section 40 of the Wildlife Acts relating to illegal burning of vegetation. Fines were imposed in most cases with, in some cases, the defendants being ordered by the Court to pay legal costs and expenses.
My Department does not maintain records nor have information in relation to prosecutions taken by An Garda Siochana.
