Details of the numbers of Medical Card and General Practitioners Visit Card holders are provided to my Department by the Health Service Executive (HSE). Details for the years 2006 to 2010 are included in the following table:
Year | No. Medical Cards | No. GP Visit Cards |
2006 | 1,221,695 | 51,760 |
2007 | 1,276,178 | 75,589 |
2008 | 1,352,120 | 85,546 |
2009 | 1,478,560 | 98,325 |

The information sought by the Deputy in relation to the number of refusals in each category in each of the past five years and the number granted on appeal is not readily available. However, I have asked the HSE to supply this information to me and I will forward it to the Deputy as soon as possible.
