I am advised by the Garda authorities that, whilst all Garda cars are capable of being driven in the snow, An Garda Síochána also utilises snow socks. These items are designed for use in adverse conditions when normal contact with the road surface is lost as the result of snow and hard packed ice.
I am further informed that the requirements of the Garda fleet are subject to regular review and assessment to ensure that the most suitable equipment is available.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that 47 Garda vehicles were withdrawn from service in 2009, 124 in 2010 and 123 to date in 2011. During the same period, 165 new vehicles were purchased in 2010 and a further seven vehicles have been purchased to date this year.
