1.The Irish Citizenship system needs a major overhaul. This process takes 2 weeks in Australia and 3 months in the UK. Why should it take 4 years in Ireland? We applied in April 2006 and hope to have this process completed in April 2010, after 4 years!
2. When we arrived in March 2001, before the issue of a GNIB card, a booklet stamped: Aliens Act, 1935, was used. This was in spite of this specific Act being repealed in 1956. Apart from the stationary used, it shows that the thinking was still from that era.
3. The Minister for Justice states that he has absolute discretion on issuing citizenship and passports. This has been modified in 2003, to stop Ministers abusing this discretion to issue 'Passports for Sale'. We now need a charter of human rights to ensure the State acknowledges and meets its obligations.
