In its Statement of Strategy 2025 - 2028, the Department of the Taoiseach commits to the judicious deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology with a view to enhancing its capacity to deliver its strategic and operational objectives.

The Department has established an AI Governance Board which is overseeing the development of a comprehensive AI strategy and policy. The strategy and policy are being developed in line with the Department of Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation's Guidelines for the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Public Service and the National Cyber Security Centre's Guidance on Generative AI for Public Sector Bodies. The Department's approach to AI will be informed by an AI Risk Assessment and Data Impact Assessment, both of which are currently underway.

AI tools are currently being used in the Department for low-risk tasks, including desk-based research and the summarising of reports and documents.

The National Economic and Social Development Office - the only body under the aegis of the Department of the Taoiseach - makes use of AI tools such as writing assistants to support the preparation and drafting of documents.
