639. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport the additional funding available from his Department to upgrade the R312 in Mayo in recognition of the importance of this route for the Erris region; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [59294/26]

In accordance with Section 13 of the Roads Act 1993, as amended, the improvement and maintenance of regional and local roads is the statutory responsibility of each local authority. Work on such roads is funded from Councils' own resources, supplemented by State road grants. The initial selection and prioritisation of work to be funded is a matter for local authorities.

My Department previously provided funding to Mayo County Council for the road re-alignment and bridge replacement scheme at Glenisland on the R312, which was completed at the end of 2021.

For 2026, under the Regional and Local Roads Grant Programme, a total of €449,000 was allocated to work associated with the R312. Of this, €69,000 was provided for climate adaptation and resilience works. €30,000 was provided to progress the planning and design of the second phase of the proposed works at Glenisland.

Lastly, €350,000 was provided for the protection and rehabilitation of highly trafficked wide former national roads and similar strategic regional roads which are in poor condition but not suitable to the regular restoration programme.
