Sandymount Flood Alleviation Scheme is being led by Dublin City Council. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Council and the OPW was agreed and signed on 5th October 2023 with the OPW the funding authority for this flood relief scheme. Consultants were appointed in December 2024 to develop engineering options and a final design for the flood relief scheme.
The first Public Participation Day (PPD) was held in Sandymount in April 2025 to provide the local community with an opportunity to contribute to the early development of the design options for the scheme. In October 2025, the report on the public consultation was made available on the scheme's website at www.floodinfo.ie/frs/en/sandymount/home.
Dublin City Council has informed OPW that it is liaising internally on possible cycleway routes, and with other potential active travel projects in the Sandymount Flood Alleviation Scheme area. Funding for any cycleway routes integrated into a flood relief scheme for Sandymount, will be a matter for Dublin City Council to secure from other State Agencies, including the National Transport Authority.
