Under the Make Work Pay initiative, a person is entitled to retain their entitlement to Free Travel for a period of 5 years after their entitlement to Disability Allowance ceases due to taking up employment. The entitlement of the person concerned to Free Travel was linked to their Disability Allowance payment. The 5 year extension of the Free Travel entitlement is now due to end and the person concerned will be notified in writing.

For your information, persons aged over 17 and under 66 who are medically certified as being unfit to drive may also qualify for Free Travel. To qualify, a person must:

  • have never been medically fit to drive due to a disability; or
  • be deemed medically unfit to drive for a period of at least one year.
There is no requirement to satisfy a means test or that the person be in receipt of a Social Protection payment to qualify for Free Travel for those medically unfit to drive.

Application forms are available to download from the on www.gov.ie/ft. Alternatively, application forms may be obtained from any Intreo Centre, or by contacting the Free Travel Section by telephone at 0818 200 400 or by email at freetravelqueries@welfare.ie. Information in relation to Free Travel is also available on the Citizen's Information website.

I hope this clarifies the matter for the Deputy.
