The Programme for Government 2025 reaffirmed Ireland’s targets of 80% of electricity demand to be met by renewable energy sources, including a target of 9GW of onshore wind generation.
According to SEAI, wind generated 8,233 GWh so far in 2025, a total of 11,399 GWh in 2024 and 11,610 GWh in 2023. Wind energy alone met 43.2% of demand in September 2025, with renewables generating 47.8% of demand on average over the last 12 months.
Wind is a variable generation technology. Actual output on a system wide basis is heavily dependent on a range of factors, including weather conditions. It is therefore not possible to accurately predict generation to year end.
Ireland currently has circa 7 GW of renewable generation capacity, up from 1.2 GW in 2015. Onshore wind is the largest contributor with circa 5.1 GW of capacity. This is complemented by circa 1.7 GW of solar PV capacity, with hydro, biomass, and other small sources contributing the remainder.
The Accelerating Renewable Electricity Taskforce was established to accelerate and increase the deployment of onshore renewable electricity generation. This cross-Government Taskforce is tasked with identifying and prioritising the policies needed to achieve our onshore renewable electricity targets and ensuring that barriers are removed or minimised to the greatest extent possible.
The Offshore Wind Delivery Taskforce continues to oversee actions required to develop offshore wind generation in Ireland.
The revised National Planning Framework also includes regional renewable electricity capacity allocations. The inclusion of the allocations will facilitate the accelerated roll-out and delivery of onshore wind and solar development. These allocations will be integrated into Regional Spatial and Economic Strategies, which will, in turn, inform city and county development plans.
