54. To ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade whether the Irish embassy in Morocco has recently engaged with Moroccan officials regarding the continued occupation of Western Sahara; the actions Irish diplomatic officials have taken to engage with the Sahrawi people directly, both within occupied Western Sahara and in Tindouf, Algeria; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The Embassy of Ireland in Rabat is accredited to Morocco, Tunisia and Mauritania. As part of its work, the embassy contributes to monitoring the situation in Western Sahara and the wider region. The Embassy regularly engages with Moroccan officials on a wide range of issues. In recent months, the outgoing Ambassador and the current Ambassador met with Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. Embassy officials are also in routine contact with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A range of issues arose for discussions in these engagements, including the situation in Western Sahara.

Furthermore, an official from my Department met recently with representatives of the Polisario Front to discuss the situation in Western Sahara.

Ireland’s position on Western Sahara continues to be guided by the aim of achieving a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution which will provide for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara.

Officials at HQ and in the Mission network continue to be in contact with relevant parties in support of efforts to achieve a solution to this long-standing dispute.
