The legal vires held by my Department with regard to motor insurance primarily concern the requirement under European law and under the Road Traffic Acts for the driver of a vehicle to hold valid third party cover. While there is no separate legislative provision in place for passengers on public transport services, my officials will consider the issues raised by the Deputy in the context of the ongoing review of the Department's Agreement with the Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland (MIBI).
