The Microgeneration Support Scheme (MSS) was approved by Government on 21 December 2021 to support Ireland’s ambitious targets for micro-generation installations under the Climate Action Plan. The MSS provides supports to both domestic and non-domestic applicants in the form of grants for solar PV installations, up to a maximum of €1,800 in 2025 for household installations. These grants are available through the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI).

The SEAI maintains data regarding the financing and functioning of the Domestic Solar PV Scheme and has provided the following breakdown by county in response to the Question.

The breakdown, by local authority of the number of domestic solar panel installations, by county for 2023 and 2024, in tabular form:

The Government approved the high-level design for the Micro-Generation Support Scheme (MSS) in December 2021 as a means of supporting 380MW of new micro-generation capacity by 2030 under the Climate Action Plan. The scheme design was supported by detailed economic and policy analysis, as well as a public consultation, prior to its approval.

The phased introduction of supports under the MSS took place during 2022 with the commencement of the MSS domestic solar PV grant in February 2022, followed by the non-domestic solar PV grant in September 2022. The non-domestic grant was significantly enhanced in July 2023 to support a wider range of businesses and non-domestic applicants.

The MSS final scheme design, which provides the background and context for the design of the grant schemes and assumptions regarding the uptake and costs, was approved in December 2022 and is available at: www.gov.ie/en/department-of-climate-energy-and-the-environment/publications/micro-generation/
