In May 2024, my Department and the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment published National Biomethane Strategy.

The Strategy outlines that in order to meet Ireland's target of 5.7 TWh of biomethane by 2030, the required anaerobic digester (AD) developments and related infrastructure will be subject to consent, including but not limited to planning permissions approved by the Local Authority or An Coimisiún Pleanála as applicable.

Planning regulations do not fall under the remit of my Department. The planning regulations of AD plants is a matter for the relevant Local Authority.
