Greenways Provision

226. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if a feasibility study has been undertaken to assess if the old disused rail line between Enfield, County Meath and Edenderry, County Offaly could be converted into a greenway thus linking both the Royal Canal and Grand Canal Greenways which is approximately 18 kilometres in length; and if he will make a statement on the matter. As Minister for Transport, I have responsibility for overall policy and exchequer funding in relation to Greenways. The planning, design and construction of individual Greenways is a matter for Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), in conjunction with the local authorities concerned, it will be vital that any proposed Greenway have the support of the relevant Local Authority as funding is only provided by TII to Local Authorities. This is also subject to the Public Spending Code and the necessary statutory approvals. In this context, TII is best placed to advise you on the status of this project.
