To ask the Minister for Health if a person currently living in the UK and planning to move here in the immediate future to join their spouse who is employed here, can submit medical evidence signed by a registered general practitioner in the UK when applying for the long term illness scheme; the current processing time for the scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. In order to apply for the Long Term Illness (LTI) scheme an individual must be ordinarily resident in Ireland, hold a PPSN and have one of the following conditions: acute leukaemia; mental handicap; cerebral palsy; mental illness (in a person under 16); cystic fibrosis; multiple sclerosis; diabetes insipidus; muscular dystrophies; diabetes mellitus; Parkinsonism; epilepsy; phenylketonuria; haemophilia; spina bifida; hydrocephalus; and conditions arising from the use of thalidomide.
Application forms are available from HSE s (LHO) and the processing time varies depending on the LHO.
