Since the introduction of the moratorium on public service recruitment in March 2009, there have been 5 instances of maternity leave in my Department. None of the staff on maternity leave were replaced.

In relation to other types of extended leave, there were 2 instances in my Department of staff availing of the Shorter Working Year Scheme (i.e. unpaid leave of 8 weeks or more) in 2009 and 5 instances in 2010. In only one case, in each of the years, was the person replaced. In this one case, the person concerned was a member of staff in the National Archives, which is particularly busy during the summer period.

The staff in my Department are deployed across the Tourism, Arts, Culture, and Sports Divisions and in the Corporate Services areas. The detailed breakdown by programme area, with staff from corporate services distributed proportionately, is set out in the Department's Annual Output Statement 2010 which is accessible on the Department's website www.tcs.gov.ie.
