Question 639: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government if he will extend the scope of the voluntary housing scheme in order that approved organisations involved in the provision of care for people with a physical and mental handicap will be in a position to avail of this grant aid for the provision of respite care facilities. The provision of accommodation by approved voluntary and co-operative housing bodies is an integral part of my Department's overall response to delivering on social housing need. Under the Voluntary Housing Capital Assistance Scheme, funding of up to 100% of the approved cost is available for the provision of permanent accommodation for persons with special housing needs, including those with an intellectual or physical disability. However, the scheme is not designed to provide accommodation and facilities for respite care, nursing home or institutional type care.
