If Members or anyone watching these proceedings have or has friends or family in the North, I call on them to get on the telephone, go on Facebook or text them about voting.

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Jul 2016)

Niall Ó Donnghaile: Beidh mé deas ciúin agus séimh i mo chuid focal anseo. I will be temperate in my remarks given the previous exchanges. It is positive that we have had some discussion around issues of fact in the North, around politics, the economy and society in the North. It is a great pity that Fianna Fáil would bring such a negative and ill-informed approach to that debate.

Niall Ó Donnghaile: -----facing that community.

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Jul 2016)

Niall Ó Donnghaile: Perhaps some it some of comes down to people standing idly by and allowing it to get to that stage. However, my fear is that the Senator is right, the block grant allocated to the Executive in the North has been cut by £4 billion by the Tory Administration in London. Given the outcome of the vote last week, there is a danger of us in the North being marooned to that Government against...

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Jul 2016)

Niall Ó Donnghaile: Given that we are in the midst of this crisis, it is imperative that we hear from the Taoiseach in terms of the next steps with respect to this forum in particular, what we will do next and how we can give a voice to ensure that one part of Ireland is not in Europe and the other part of it is out of it. That is bad for Ireland overall. It reinforces partition which is already bad for all...

Seanad: Proceeds of Crime (Amendment) Bill 2016: Committee and Remaining Stages (7 Jul 2016)

Niall Ó Donnghaile: I will be relatively brief. I have not been too lucky with my amendments but I will not take it personally. I thank the Minister of State for addressing the House on this important legislation. The sentiments expressed today and in the amendments indicate that we are all approaching this from a sincere point of view in that we want to get the legislation right. In the past 24 hours, I...

Seanad: Proceeds of Crime (Amendment) Bill 2016: Committee and Remaining Stages (7 Jul 2016)

Niall Ó Donnghaile: I thank the Minister of State for his contribution. This has been a tempered and sincere debate, with contributions right across the spectrum. Any legislation that appropriately empowers the Garda and other agencies to deal with the criminals who are plaguing our communities and streets is of critical importance and can only be welcomed. As we move ahead in terms of broader societal...

Niall Ó Donnghaile: Maidin mhaith duit, a Chathaoirligh. Tá mé chun dhá ábhar gasta a ardú ar maidin. Hopefully, the Cathaoirleach will indulge me if I say a few quick words to commend the people responsible for ensuring that yesterday's 12 July events in the North passed off, by and large, without any major incident. That is down to a tremendous amount of work by community and...

Niall Ó Donnghaile: Go for it.

Seanad: Seanad Bill 2016: Second Stage (13 Jul 2016)

Niall Ó Donnghaile: Ba mhaith liom buíochas a ghabháil leis an Aire Stáit as teacht isteach chun an Bhille seo a phlé. I extend my apologies for not being in the Chamber for all the debate but I followed a bit of it in the office between meetings. It is a sincere debate and we must be inward-looking in the first instance because we have the privilege of being elected to the Chamber and a...
