Post-European Council Meetings: Statements (27 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: My question is related to the situation in Venezuela. It is incredibly significant and could be a real game changer in world politics. The Irish Government and the European Union have the potential to play a positive role. I appeal to the Government to start that role in a positive way. It was a big mistake for it and the European Union to support the unelected Juan Guaidó, who is a...

Post-European Council Meetings: Statements (27 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: I may be. I re-echo Deputy Boyd Barrett's comments about the Taoiseach's attack on Jeremy Corbyn's Labour Party and the notion of anti-Semitism. It is the height of inaccurate populism on the Taoiseach's part. It is totally inaccurate and he could serve himself better. The Government's decision and the decision of 23 governments of the EU to recognise Guaidó as the interim...

Post-European Council Meetings: Statements (27 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: The pigs are listening.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Food Exports to Iran (26 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: The US sanctions on financial transactions are an issue, but one can get around them. Between March 2018 and March 2019 we sold them approximately €140 million worth of goods. How was it managed? It can be done and if there is a will, there is a way. It is not just down to the regulations either. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has an issue in that it does not want to...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Food Exports to Iran (26 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: 59. To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine if he or his officials have had discussions with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade or with Iranian officials regarding the possible resumption of exports of beef and lamb to Iran; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13956/19]

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Food Exports to Iran (26 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: Have the Minister or his officials had any discussions with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade or spoken to Iranian representatives with a view to reopening markets for beef and lamb sales? As has been discussed here at length, there is more beef in cold storage plants currently than we would like and not selling it to the likes of the Iranians does not make a great deal of sense.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Food Exports to Iran (26 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: I realise that Iran is buying a great deal of meat from Australia, New Zealand and Brazil, as well as from Romania. It is buying a lot of meat from Romania. Only recently, the Iranians purchased 50,000 lamb carcasses. In 2018, they imported 160,000 tonnes of meat. It is a huge market which would like to trade with us. They have made it very obvious that they want to do business with us....

National Children's Hospital: Motion [Private Members] (12 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: I thank the Rural Independent Group for giving me time. This is the fifth time I have raised the national children's hospital in this House. I have asked many questions. I have got very few answers. I have put down many written questions to which I got a couple of answers, not many. It is a bit like trying to unravel the secret of Fatima. It is absolute nonsense that there is no...

Local Drug and Alcohol Task Forces: Motion [Private Members] (7 Mar 2019)

Mick Wallace: I support the motion. We could implement all the actions in the motion and matters would certainly improve for people who are suffering under a crazy system, but many of the situations that give rise to the drugs issue will persist. The criminalisation of drugs is a travesty. Above all, it is a gift to the gangs that have been handed by the State a tax-free business that is worth over...

Prohibition of Above-cost Ticket Touting Bill 2017: Second Stage (Resumed) (21 Feb 2019)

Mick Wallace: I am not really sure where I was in my contribution. Perhaps the Minister of State might remember.

Prohibition of Above-cost Ticket Touting Bill 2017: Second Stage (Resumed) (21 Feb 2019)

Mick Wallace: While I find the legislation disappointing, I was at great pains to explain that I was as fond of overpaying for tickets as anyone else. In fact, I absolutely hate paying above the odds. I remember being outside the old Lansdowne Road stadium in the early 1980s when tickets were being sold at an awful price and I could not afford to buy them. I got a fellow to give me a leg up onto the...

Fourth Interim Report of the Commission of Investigation into Mother and Baby Homes: Statements (Resumed) (21 Feb 2019)

Mick Wallace: Retraumatisation is a conscious or unconscious reminder of past trauma that results in a re-experiencing of the initial trauma event. It can be triggered by a situation, an attitude or expression, or by certain environments that replicate the dynamics and the loss of power, control and safety of the original trauma. Not being believed or listened to is another factor in trauma and retrauma....

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (21 Feb 2019)

Mick Wallace: Because of US sanctions.

Data Sharing and Governance Bill 2018: From the Seanad (20 Feb 2019)

Mick Wallace: I am not arguing against that.

Data Sharing and Governance Bill 2018: From the Seanad (20 Feb 2019)

Mick Wallace: We accept and are not querying the need to verify people's identities, but the process will enable the creation of a massive database of citizens' data. That database may well improve the administration and delivery of public services, but it is also important to state that increased data sharing does not necessarily lead to increased data quality. The streamlining of services and the...

Data Sharing and Governance Bill 2018: From the Seanad (20 Feb 2019)

Mick Wallace: Amendments Nos. 1 to 3, inclusive, seek to overturn amendments which were submitted by Deputy Clare Daly and myself and successfully passed on Committee and Report Stage in the Dáil with the support of Sinn Féin, Fianna Fáil and others. The Bill went back to the Seanad the week before last and Fianna Fáil Senators very strangely voted to overturn our amendments, despite...

Data Sharing and Governance Bill 2018: From the Seanad (20 Feb 2019)

Mick Wallace: We really hope that Fianna Fáil Deputies will not do a U-turn on this and that they do not hide behind this wonderful contraption called confidence and supply. The public services card project is a ticking time bomb for the Government as far as we are concerned. If by chance Fianna Fáil Deputies were to do a U-turn on it, it might not look great on their record when the trouble...

Confidence in the Minister for Health: Motion (Resumed) (20 Feb 2019)

Mick Wallace: The Taoiseach and Tánaiste told us there was a gross underestimate of the cost of building the hospital. Who underestimated it? Was it BAM? The contract was awarded on foot of a competition. BAM told the Government what it would cost. If there was a scope change, then the price would obviously go up, but if the scope was not determined, why did the Government go for a fixed price...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Public Services Card (19 Feb 2019)

Mick Wallace: 51. To ask the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection if the final report on the Data Protection Commissioner's investigation into the public services card will be published; if a full or summary report will be published; the reason a full report would not be published; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8093/19]

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Public Services Card (19 Feb 2019)

Mick Wallace: There are many regulators in Ireland, most of which, including, for example, GSOC, the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission and the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, provide clear pathways to track enforcements on imports. The Data Protection Commission appears to have looked at a wide range of issues in one form or another, yet there is no clear record of reports or enforcement...
