Ceisteanna - Questions: Cabinet Committees (21 Nov 2023)

Leo Varadkar: ...hydrogen and biogas, and biomethane in particular. In the medium term, our security comes from the Corrib field and the interconnectors with the UK. There will also be a need for some form of LNG storage, either floating or fixed. That is to be determined over the next few months. With regard to new blue gas fields, no new expiration licences are being permitted by the Government...

Ceisteanna - Questions: Cabinet Committees (18 Oct 2023)

Leo Varadkar: ...the grid and thereby help to solve the problem if there is shortage of supply. We are assured there will not be any red alerts this winter and it is unlikely there will be amber alerts either. LNG infrastructure is not about data centres but is about the issue of gas supply. We in Ireland are going to need natural gas until at least 2050, if not beyond then. Even if we achieve net...

Ceisteanna - Questions: Cabinet Committees (1 Mar 2023)

Leo Varadkar: ...after. We have 90 days' worth of reserves for petrol, diesel, kerosene and oil, which is important too. We are examining whether we need to supplement our gas security with liquefied natural gas, LNG. However, we have two sources of gas, the two pipelines that come from the UK and our own Corrib gas field. I honestly do not believe the future is in further oil and gas exploration....

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (22 Mar 2022)

Leo Varadkar: ...on him than it is on me, quite frankly. In respect of the programme for Government, it is there in black and white. Anyone can read it. It is clear what the programme for Government states on LNG, and that programme for Government was approved after a democratic vote by the Oireachtas Members of my party, our councillors and our members, and everyone in Fianna Fáil and the Green...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (3 Mar 2022)

Leo Varadkar: ...gas. Approximately one quarter or one third of our gas comes from the Corrib - it is our own gas - and the rest comes from the UK. The latter is gas from the North Sea and liquified natural gas, LNG, brought through terminals in the UK. We are confident at this stage that we will not face any disruption in the supply of gas, petrol, diesel or electricity. The long-term security issue...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (24 Feb 2022)

Leo Varadkar: ...if it was not for the climate crisis, for economic and security reasons, we need to wean ourselves off our dependence on fossil fuels. As the Deputy said, there is a planning application for an LNG terminal in Tarbert in north Kerry. I am familiar with that project, which is currently at planning permission stage. It is not supported by the Government but if it gets planning...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (27 Jan 2022)

Leo Varadkar: ...our gas comes from our own supplies in the Corrib gas field and the other half comes from Britain. Most of that either comes from Britain, Norway or Qatar. The gas comes from Qatar on ships to LNG terminals in Britain and then comes across the pipelines into Ireland. Thus, while we do not have an LNG terminal, we use LNG. It just comes in from Britain rather than coming into one of our...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement: Discussion with Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment (26 May 2021)

Leo Varadkar: ...have only read the memorandum brought to Cabinet by the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, Deputy Eamon Ryan. The best thing to do is take it up with him. The issues around LNG and the Energy Charter Treaty are matters for him, as Minister. The Energy Charter Treaty, which is old at this stage, was not deemed to be unconstitutional. If that was not...

Written Answers — Department of Trade, Enterprise and Employment: Programme for Government (8 Oct 2020)

Leo Varadkar: I understand that the Deputy’s Question relates to the establishment of a task force for north Kerry following the Programme for Government statement to withdraw the Shannon LNG terminal from the EU Projects of Common Interest List in 2021. I can advise the Deputy that the Government has committed to ensuring that local development plans are developed to stimulate economic activity...

Written Answers — Department of Trade, Enterprise and Employment: Regional Development (7 Oct 2020)

Leo Varadkar: ...as contributors to economic growth. The Deputy will be aware that the Programme for Government provides that as Ireland moves towards carbon neutrality it does not make sense to develop LNG gas import terminals importing fracked gas. The Deputy will be aware that my Department’s nine Regional Enterprise Plans to 2020 were launched by my Department in early 2019 with the...

Ceisteanna (Atógáil) - Questions (Resumed): Cabinet Committee Meetings (2 Oct 2019)

Leo Varadkar: The question the Deputy asked was whether the LNG terminal was discussed at the Cabinet committee. It was not. My understanding is that the LNG terminal could be used to receive fracked gas, but not necessarily or exclusively. It could receive any liquefied natural gas so it could be used to receive gas transported by sea that is not fracked.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: EU Transport Council: Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport (28 May 2014)

Leo Varadkar: ...negotiations on the directive on the deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure. The Commission welcomed progress in the negotiations but regretted the Council’s lack of ambition regarding the deadline for liquefied natural gas, LNG, infrastructure for ports. Italy, Germany, Finland, Denmark, Spain, Belgium and Ireland all intervened to emphasise the importance of reaching...
