Confidence in the Minister for Justice and Equality: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (29 May 2013)

Paul Kehoe: ...long term the grandstanding of the Deputies opposite will fool nobody. I cannot overlook the contribution made by Deputy Mattie McGrath in the circus of recent days. The comparison made by Deputy Buttimer last night to Lyndon Johnson hit the nail on the head. The former President used to say, "Of course the allegation is untrue but let's make him deny it". Deputy McGrath asked a...

I express my full confidence in the Minister for Justice and Equality and Minister for Defence, Deputy Shatter, and commend him on the tremendous work he is doing thus far in his regime as Minister. I want to speak about a man...

Brendan Howlin: ...parliament that does not conduct inquiries and we are peculiar in being unable to do so, or incapable of doing so, in a robust fashion in this Parliament. I agree with Deputies Paschal Donohoe and Jerry Buttimer that this legislation provides an opportunity for us to change the political culture by giving the Oireachtas the tools to do its job effectively and trusting Members of the House...

Houses of the Oireachtas (Inquiries, Privileges and Procedures) Bill 2013: Second Stage (Resumed) (23 May 2013)

Mattie McGrath: ...Bill has been proposed by Senator Quinn and Deputy Ross and others. We need that second House to oversee and to marshal the wisdom in it. It needs a broader electorate, elected by the people. I hate going back to it but Deputy Buttimer was here last night and made reference to the proceedings in the Joint Committee on Health and Children from Friday to Tuesday and last January. The...

The Bill is not drafted yet. The Government approved the heads of a Bill and has sent it to the Oireachtas committee at which a discussion will take place on them. After the committee...

Order of Business (30 Apr 2013)

Jerry Buttimer: Given the importance of the noise nuisance Bill to people in Cork city, when will the Bill be introduced? It affects rented accommodation and the role of landlords with enforcement powers being given to local authorities. Landlords have responsibility as do tenants. In residential areas they are causing mayhem to local residents in the area around UCC and Bishopstown.

There was a lack of enthusiasm from the Minister...

Andrew Doyle: I welcome the opportunity to speak to this Bill. With my colleagues, Deputies Buttimer, Regina Doherty and Heather Humphreys, I have been part of the all-party committee examining the symphysiotomy issue with colleagues across the floor of the House. Jerry Buttimer: I remind the Deputies opposite that this Government will last its full term. We will not be like the Green Party and Fianna Fáil and we will not flake on the Irish people. If I was to arrive in this Chamber from another planet and read Deputy Michael McGrath's motion, I would have said "fair play" because everything to which he aspires is what the Government is doing and everything he...
