Seanad: National Recovery Plan 2011-2014: Motion (30 Nov 2010)

Ivor Callely: I welcome the opportunity to participate in this Private Members' debate on the National Recovery Plan 2011-2014. We seem to be on a roller-coaster of an economic and financial nightmare with everything falling apart. There is a general air of anxiety and demoralisation. Unemployment and financial burdens have brought hardship, suffering and personal degradation into almost every home....

Seanad: National Recovery Plan 2011-2014: Motion (30 Nov 2010)

Ivor Callely: It should apologise and spell out in user-friendly understandable language how we can get ourselves out of the mess. The Government is not getting the message across.

Seanad: National Recovery Plan 2011-2014: Motion (30 Nov 2010)

Ivor Callely: It is foolishly irresponsible for anyone to think that simply to change the political leadership will totally change the outlook for the country. The grim reality is that the globe is going through an exceptionally difficult period and the euro seems to be the target for the hit. I regret I do not have the time to conclude my contribution.

Seanad: National Recovery Plan 2011-2014: Motion (30 Nov 2010)

Ivor Callely: It was two minutes each. Senator Butler was to be given two minutes.

Seanad: National Recovery Plan 2011-2014: Motion (30 Nov 2010)

Ivor Callely: No, it was to be two minutes for each of the four of us.

Seanad: National Recovery Plan 2011-2014: Motion (30 Nov 2010)

Ivor Callely: In fairness, the Senator should be allowed two minutes. Perhaps Senator Phelan would allow that.

Seanad: Order of Business (30 Nov 2010)

Ivor Callely: I congratulate our former colleague, Deputy Pearse Doherty, on his election to Dáil Éireann and Sinn Féin on its win in the Donegal South-West by-election. I also congratulate him on his courage to challenge the holding of the by-election. Part of the Government's defence in the High Court was Article 15 of the Constitution.

Seanad: Order of Business (30 Nov 2010)

Ivor Callely: I am about to put the question relevant to what I am saying.

Seanad: Order of Business (30 Nov 2010)

Ivor Callely: I hope the Cathaoirleach is not somewhat touchy on the subject. The committee on the Constitution is currently reviewing parliamentary power of inquiry, under Article 15 of the Constitution. It has received evidence from academic experts in this area and suggestions have been made that a constitutional amendment is required, partly because of uncertainty with regard to the Oireachtas and...

Seanad: Order of Business (30 Nov 2010)

Ivor Callely: I will resume my seat, but I will write to the Cathaoirleach on the issue. It is a very important issue and cannot be put aside.

Seanad: Order of Business (25 Nov 2010)

Ivor Callely: I am deeply concerned at the escalation of serious crime and that the value placed on human life has now broken the Richter scale. The shooting dead of Glenn Murphy and Mark Noonan in a north Dublin shopping centre early yesterday is a step too far, and I offer my condolences to the family and friends of these two young men. Will the Leader agree to have a debate on policing and request the...

Seanad: Order of Business (24 Nov 2010)

Ivor Callely: I welcome the publication of the four-year economic plan and support the multi-annual approach of addressing and running our nation's affairs. As we head into the general election in early 2011 and reflect on party political election promises of previous elections, I suggest that, since the four-year plan is the first attempt to set out our stall, costed and explained to the public, all...

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Nov 2010)

Ivor Callely: Members of the House sometimes become too embroiled in the politics of issues which are outside the remit of the House and can thereby lose sight of the real issues into which we can have a meaningful input. We may throw caution to the wind to score political points. We must ensure we always apply fairness and fair procedures. There is great talk of our nation's finances, the IMF, the ECB...

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Nov 2010)

Ivor Callely: We live in interesting times. The public is deeply concerned by what is happening in the country and the role and impact of the EU in our sovereign State. The Single European Act is under review as we approach the 20th anniversary in 2012 of the formal launch of the Single Market in 1992 and the current economic downturn is putting pressure on the Single Market and the issue of...
