Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Water Quality (28 Jun 2023)

Róisín Garvey: Gabhaim buíochas leis an Aire Stáit as ucht teacht isteach. I am starting to sound like a broken record. I do not know how many times I have come in here with water issues but I will keep going. The Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, only has 11 enforcement officers for the entire country. The most recent EPA report on water shows we still have huge issues with water quality...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Water Quality (28 Jun 2023)

Róisín Garvey: I thank the Minister of State for his response. Are those 57 additional staff for the EPA or the local authorities? The Minister of State referred to 21 additional inspection posts. We have 30 local authorities so I do not see how that works because we need at least one per county, if not seven. I am curious. We have annual or biannual meetings with the CEO and director of services. I...

Seanad: Local Government Matters: Statements (28 Jun 2023)

Róisín Garvey: Cuirim fáilte ar ais roimh an Aire Stáit. I will focus on housing. My county of Clare is a mainly rural county. We have Ennis, Shannon and Kilrush, and that is about it when it comes to towns. There is great stuff being done on housing. It is really good in urban areas but my concern is that a lot of the activity through the Land Development Agency is not relevant in my county....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Sustainable Development Goals: Discussion (28 Jun 2023)

Róisín Garvey: Cuirim fáilte roimh na finnéithe. It is very important that we have this opportunity to talk about sustainable development goals. I used to teach about them in schools for many years, and do workshops to introduce the concepts, because the vocabulary around them is quite interesting. It is not the best vocabulary I would use for getting things across the line, and for people...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Sustainable Development Goals: Discussion (28 Jun 2023)

Róisín Garvey: It depends on the local authority. Some of them deliver to islands not in their local authority area. This is where we have an issue. It is an issue I want to raise. If they are paying the local authority, does the money go directly to the island? It does not.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Sustainable Development Goals: Discussion (28 Jun 2023)

Róisín Garvey: It is part of the SDGs. If we want the islands to be able to sustain themselves, they will need extra financial support. Perhaps we should examine this coming from the ferry companies that might be making money from getting people there but not taking any responsibility for their footprint. There will be more vulnerabilities for rural dwellers and islanders because of the climate change...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Sustainable Development Goals: Discussion (28 Jun 2023)

Róisín Garvey: Yes, as have I. It is good to air here the importance of rural transport if we are speaking about SDGs and justice. It is a just transition, I suppose.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Sustainable Development Goals: Discussion (28 Jun 2023)

Róisín Garvey: We have never really addressed the sustainable development goals at the committee and they are supposed to be addressed by every committee. It is important. The point I am trying to make is on where this sits with local authorities. I would love the advice and guidance of the witnesses on this. If we do not take it seriously at local authority level I do not know what we will do.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Sustainable Development Goals: Discussion (28 Jun 2023)

Róisín Garvey: Deputy Ó Cuív can come in whenever he wants but I cannot.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Sustainable Development Goals: Discussion (28 Jun 2023)

Róisín Garvey: I was not asking about fibre broadband. It came up as an issue that the digihub in Inis Oírr has been a solution to that issue, so perhaps that is something that can be looked at in resect of the islands. The other thing about the ferries is that I was just saying they could donate. I was not questioning-----

Seanad: Youth Mental Health and Guidance Services in Secondary Schools: Motion [Private Members] (21 Jun 2023)

Róisín Garvey: I acknowledge the presence of the vice president of the IGC, Ms Catriona Rodgers, who takes on the role voluntarily and does not get paid. She has been stellar in her work with me. I hear all the time from two friends I have grown up with who have been guidance counsellors for 25 years, but Ms Rodgers still managed to educate me much further than I was previously on the whole challenge...
