Written Answers — Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Greyhound Industry (13 Dec 2022)

Johnny Mythen: 677. To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine the amount of funding that went to the Enniscorthy greyhound track from the horse and greyhound racing funds from 2016 to date in 2022; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [62022/22]

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (8 Dec 2022)

Johnny Mythen: I have been engaging with some of the retained firefighters in County Wexford. A national survey indicated that 60% of them intend to leave soon. A new fire station recently opened in New Ross, which is welcome. However, it cost €1.6 million and due to staffing it is only operating as a one-pump station and must rely on other stations such as Enniscorthy, which is at least half an...

Gambling Regulation Bill 2022: Second Stage (6 Dec 2022)

Johnny Mythen: Gambling addiction is devastating many families, usually behind closed doors. What is a fun activity for some is a devastating, soul-destroying addiction for others. All the while, companies make colossal profits off this unbreakable cycle, particularly when there is a downturn in the economy. The Irish Timesreported that Irish gamblers lost €1.36 billion in 2020, amounting to...

Written Answers — Department of Health: Health Services Staff (1 Dec 2022)

Johnny Mythen: 330. To ask the Minister for Health if he will set up a community neuro-rehabilitation team in CHO-5 given that at present only 15% of the entire area of CHO5 has access to neuro-rehabilitation services; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [60104/22]

Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill 2022: Report and Final Stages (30 Nov 2022)

Johnny Mythen: I would like to concur with my colleagues on the €2.5 million, which is very welcome news. It shows that the Minister is taking this seriously. On the issue of the grants, there were a lot of complaints about them not being on time and the length of time it took for them to be handed out was not conducive. I would appreciate it if that could be looked at as well.

Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill 2022: Report and Final Stages (30 Nov 2022)

Johnny Mythen: Local independent radio is very important to communities, especially in rural areas, including in large towns and villages. Local stations' news updates and delivery of up-to-the-minute happenings during the pandemic and during storms contributed enormously to public safety and in no small way to the saving of lives. Their economic challenges following the pandemic have multiplied...

Johnny Mythen: I move amendment No. 17: In page 27, between lines 7 and 8, to insert the following: "(3) In the case of no fewer than 30 per cent of Commissioners and at least 20 per cent of members of the staff of the Commission, a person shall not be appointed to these roles unless he or she is able to communicate proficiently in the Irish language. This provision shall be in force in relation to all...

Johnny Mythen: I move amendment No. 10: In page 19, line 9, after “efficiently” to insert the following: “, including the power to compel online services to provide any data requested that pertains to public interest research, or any data that the Commissioner deems to be relevant in protection of the common good in a time specified and determined by the Commission”....

Drugs Policy: Motion [Private Members] (30 Nov 2022)

Johnny Mythen: I thank the Labour Party for bringing forward this motion. This is an area that has been neglected and left unchanged and unchallenged. It is tied up with restrictive, punitive policies and narrow legislation. The consequences of criminalisation, particularly of many young people, leads to life-changing disadvantages including being denied travel to certain countries, employment in some...

Forestry: Statements (24 Nov 2022)

Johnny Mythen: Forestry is one of the key components that can deliver lower emissions and contribute substantially to our domestic construction industry. It also has a major role to play in reducing global warming and achieving our emission targets. However, we must all learn the lessons from our over-reliance on imported energy and fuel and the consequences of Russia's invasion of a sovereign nation,...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future Business Model Plans and Long-term Vision for the Media Sector: Discussion (24 Nov 2022)

Johnny Mythen: I thank the Cathaoirleach, Senator Mark Daly, and the Chairman for organising this meeting. It is an historic day and it is nice to be here. I thank our guests for what they do. They provide diversity and plurality in our society, which is important to our democracy. It is very often understated. They contribute to the proper functioning of democracy in our society, provide a platform...

Social Welfare Bill 2022: Second Stage (Resumed) (23 Nov 2022)

Johnny Mythen: A robust and adequate social welfare system is the cornerstone of any republic, the sworn duty and aim of which should be to look after the most vulnerable and the less well-off in society. The nation's population will be healthier and freer to enjoy their life, if they know there is a safety net for them and their families if they fall on hard times. In the current cost-of-living crisis,...

Select Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Estimates for Public Services 2022
Vote 35 - Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media (Supplementary)
(23 Nov 2022)

Johnny Mythen: The pilot scheme was very successful, as shown by the 9,000 applicants. Maybe some time in future we can broaden this out. People need a living wage as well. I think people on the scheme are given €300 per week.

Select Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Estimates for Public Services 2022
Vote 35 - Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media (Supplementary)
(23 Nov 2022)

Johnny Mythen: Yes, and the pandemic unemployment payment was €350, so we accepted people need at least that to live, at least. Maybe we could broaden that out in future. I spoke to some of the people who availed of it and they were happy because it got them off the hook. They are in a desperate situation because they are artists and they act in different ways and think in different ways. That is...

Select Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Estimates for Public Services 2022
Vote 35 - Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media (Supplementary)
(23 Nov 2022)

Johnny Mythen: They probably thought if they asked for €350 they would not get it. The Minister knows how it works. In all seriousness, we need to bring it up to the living wage. It needs to get to that stage because as I said, artists are really precious to us. They lift us out of certain things in life and they really need help. Most of them work on a whim anyway. They might work this week...

Select Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Estimates for Public Services 2022
Vote 35 - Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media (Supplementary)
(23 Nov 2022)

Johnny Mythen: There may be some sort of scope to expand or broaden the scheme. Many artists are single bands or artists, particularly pub entertainers and so on. They found it difficult to apply for and get it. Maybe that could be considered as well.

Select Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: National Tourism Development Authority (Amendment) Bill 2022: Committee Stage (23 Nov 2022)

Johnny Mythen: I do not need to explain to the Minister the importance of tourism to Ireland. I think there are 250,000 or 260,000 people working in the industry, which is phenomenal. It is growing through different sorts of music and that type of thing we are doing. It is important that Fáilte Ireland be funded properly. Bigger schemes are coming on. The industry suffered a lot during the...
