Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Schools Building Projects (17 Apr 2024)

Lorraine Clifford-Lee: I thank the Minister of State for that update. Can we get somebody within the Department actually to liaise with the school? That information was not communicated to the board of management. It is operating in a vacuum and obviously has to report back to the parents and the whole community as to what is going on. However, when no communication is going back that is a frustrating situation...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Schools Building Projects (17 Apr 2024)

Lorraine Clifford-Lee: I am sorry to have to raise this Commencement matter because the issue is an ongoing one. Rush National School is a school in north County Dublin that was built in 1953 and now has 700 pupils. Morgan Doran is the principal and runs an excellent school. It has served untold numbers of people from Rush and it is an excellent school. Plans have been afoot to build a new school on the site...

Seanad: Agriculture: Statements (16 Apr 2024)

Lorraine Clifford-Lee: I thank the Cathaoirleach.

Seanad: Health (Termination of Pregnancy Services) (Safe Access Zones) Bill 2023: Committee Stage (Resumed) (16 Apr 2024)

Lorraine Clifford-Lee: I want to briefly put some matters on the record of the Seanad. I know I am not going to convince anybody one way or the other by anything I say. Senator Mullen spoke about a better alternative to abortion services. For the person choosing to avail of these services, this is the best option for them. Many of them are people of deep faith, but for one reason or another, are in this...

Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community: Cathair na Gaillimhe, Cathair na Gaeilge: Plé (8 Mar 2024)

Lorraine Clifford-Lee: Gabhaim míle buíochas leis an gCathaoirleach agus lenár n-aíonna as a gcur i láthair. Níl ach dhá cheist an-ghairid agam. Díreoidh mé ceist ar Máirtín Ó Donnchadha agus Marcus Ó Conaire. Cad a dhéanann siad laistigh de na comhairlí contae chun daoine a aithint le Gaeilge atá fostaithe faoi láthair?...

Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community: Cathair na Gaillimhe, Cathair na Gaeilge: Plé (8 Mar 2024)

Lorraine Clifford-Lee: Tá ceist amháin eile agam. An gcuireann an chomhairle aon bhreisoideachas ar fáil do dhaoine a bhfuil Gaeilge acu ach gur theastaíonn uathu í a fhorbairt nó a fheabhsú le dianchúrsa, cúrsa iarchéime san ollscoil nó mar sin?

Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community: Cathair na Gaillimhe, Cathair na Gaeilge: Plé (8 Mar 2024)

Lorraine Clifford-Lee: Cuirfidh mé ceist amhain eile, más féidir liom. Conas atá ag éirí le daoine nach bhfuil ón tír seo ó dhúchas - teifigh, daoine ó thíortha Eorpacha agus eile? An bhfuil siadsan ag glacadh páirt i saol na Gaeilge sa chathair?

Seanad: Seachtain na Gaeilge: Ráitis (6 Mar 2024)

Lorraine Clifford-Lee: Gabhaim buíochas leis an Cathaoirleach Gníomhach. Fáiltím roimh an Aire le linn Sheachtain na Gaeilge. Is iontach a bheith anseo ag labhairt faoin Ghaeilge, ach tá an-chuid fadhbanna ann. Cé go bhfuil an-chuid déanta, tá fadhbanna ann faoi láthair, faoi mar a dúirt mo chomhghleacaí ó Chontae an Chláir, an Seanadóir...

Seanad: Human Tissue (Transplantation, Post-Mortem, Anatomical Examination and Public Display) Bill 2022: Report and Final Stages (14 Feb 2024)

Lorraine Clifford-Lee: Like Senator Conway, I congratulate the Minister and his officials, who have worked so hard on this legislation. It is well overdue but it is fantastic that we have finished considering it here in the Seanad, allowing it to be moved swiftly to the Dáil. I hope colleagues in the Dáil will be as co-operative as all the Senators have been in order to produce really good legislation....

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (30 Jan 2024)

Lorraine Clifford-Lee: On behalf of the Fianna Fáil group, I would also like to express my sympathies to the Fine Gael Parliamentary Party, to the wider party and to the family, friends and community of John Connor. It must be an awful shock to lose somebody so suddenly like that, so they have our sympathies. I would like to welcome the deal that was backed by the DUP overnight. It was great to wake up to...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (22 Jan 2024)

Lorraine Clifford-Lee: The Order of Business is No. 1, Thirty-ninth Amendment of the Constitution (The Family) Bill 2023 - Second Stage to be taken at 3.15 p.m. and to conclude after two hours if not previously concluded, with the time allocated to the opening remarks of the Minister not to exceed ten minutes, all Senators not to exceed ten minutes and the Minister to be given no less than ten minutes to reply to...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (22 Jan 2024)

Lorraine Clifford-Lee: Twenty-one Senators contributed - it was 20 until Senator O'Sullivan came in - and all of them paid glowing tribute to Senator Norris. It is now my turn to do so as Acting Leader on this very special day. It is a great honour. Senator Norris is the longest-serving Senator for a reason. That reason relates to everything people spoke about today, namely, his dedication to public service and...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (22 Jan 2024)

Lorraine Clifford-Lee: Yes, I am.

Seanad: Health (Termination of Pregnancy Services) (Safe Access Zones) Bill 2023: Second Stage (14 Dec 2023)

Lorraine Clifford-Lee: The Minister is very welcome. I am glad that the day has come where this legislation has come before us and we will progress it through the Seanad. As he alluded to, he has discussed this topic here on a few occasions. He has behaved very constructively with the Opposition and everybody here who have tried to improve the situation and he has come back to us with really good legislation. I...

Seanad: Policing, Security and Community Safety Bill 2023: Committee Stage (Resumed) (13 Dec 2023)

Lorraine Clifford-Lee: Subsection (2) states: The Garda Commissioner shall, as soon as practicable after he or she forms the opinion that any actions, proposed actions, omissions or proposed omissions by him or her will have the effect of An Garda Síochána exceeding the resources available. Would it not be advisable to apply a specific timeframe rather than use the term “as soon as...
