Select Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Estimates for Public Service 2023
Vote 31 - Transport (Supplementary)
(28 Nov 2023)

Martin Kenny: I want to come back in on one issue. The Minister mentioned bypasses and particularly some of our road networks that need work in that regard. I am conscious that the Minister was in County Sligo a number of months ago. We were disappointed on that day when he told us there would not be funding for the N17. I would like an update on that. The Minister mentioned that there would be...

Select Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Estimates for Public Service 2023
Vote 31 - Transport (Supplementary)
(28 Nov 2023)

Martin Kenny: Are there issues, which is something we hear, in that when a project goes to the Department, one section has to be done before work can start on the next section and before it can go to the next stage? There is this delaying situation whereby Transport Infrastructure Ireland feels it is not getting the kind of flow that used to be there to get these projects moving faster resulting in delay...

Select Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Estimates for Public Service 2023
Vote 31 - Transport (Supplementary)
(28 Nov 2023)

Martin Kenny: The issue I am trying to draw attention to is that when a decision is made to invest in a particular piece of infrastructure or particular road or bypass that will move ahead, instead of moving with the pace one would expect, it happens stage by stage. There is frustration there.

Social Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2023: Second Stage (23 Nov 2023)

Martin Kenny: It is appropriate we have these discussions about the budget and Social Welfare Bill. We of course recognise that some improvements are being made and additional payments being made to people. That is all welcome and needs to happen as quickly as possible. I also welcome the pay-related payments, which are hugely progressive. We needed to see that happen a long time ago. As has been...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Management of Passenger Numbers at Dublin Airport: Discussion (22 Nov 2023)

Martin Kenny: I thank Mr. Jacobs for his presentation. I will go back over some of what Mr. Jacobs said. In relation to the cap on 32 million passengers, it is a little confusing. I understand that Mr. Jacobs is not counting the transfers within the airport. However, these are people who are in the airport. It seems that is a selective interpretation on the DAA's behalf. Everybody else is counting...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Management of Passenger Numbers at Dublin Airport: Discussion (22 Nov 2023)

Martin Kenny: But those people are still in queues. Those people are still collecting bags. Those people are still doing everything else in the airport as everyone else that comes to you.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Management of Passenger Numbers at Dublin Airport: Discussion (22 Nov 2023)

Martin Kenny: Does Mr. Jacobs think that will be challenged?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Management of Passenger Numbers at Dublin Airport: Discussion (22 Nov 2023)

Martin Kenny: Mr. Jacobs mentioned that the traffic that comes to the airport is something the DAA does not have any control over. He said that the DAA is like a hotel in that it organises the facilities and everybody else decides where they come to. When hotels get full or near capacity, they co-operate with other hotels in their region, in their area or whatever to ensure they can provide services for...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Management of Passenger Numbers at Dublin Airport: Discussion (22 Nov 2023)

Martin Kenny: Mr. Jacobs mentioned Cork as an area and gave a specific portion of a slide over to the development there. I welcome that. It is good to see. Cork is not at capacity. It does not have a cap. It does not have a limit. I wonder how much effort is being put in to develop more routes from and into Cork.
