There is a great opportunity now for this country to forge...

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Nov 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: I suggest to the Leader that he convey to the relevant Ministries the opportunities in Libya but I must add that it is a proud and joyful day for Libyan ex-patriots in this country.

Seanad: Water Services (Amendment) Bill 2011: Committee Stage (Resumed) (23 Nov 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: Bhí mé ag léamh "An Droma Mór" aréir agus mhothaigh mé rud éigin nuair a léigh mé an ráiteas "Tá dhá ceann ar an aimsir." Mothaím go bhfuil dhá cheann ar an Seanadóir Ó Clochartaigh. Uair a chloig ó shin chuala mé é ag moladh táille €200 ar na -----

Seanad: Water Services (Amendment) Bill 2011: Committee Stage (Resumed) (23 Nov 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: Ní aontaím leis an leasú seo ar chor ar bith.

Seanad: Water Services (Amendment) Bill 2011: Committee Stage (Resumed) (23 Nov 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: Tá a fhios agam. Tá an Seanadóir ag moladh nach mbeadh táille ar bith ann anois, nach bhfuil sé? Tá siad ag moladh nach mbeadh táille ar bith ann nuair a bhí siad ag moladh táille €200. Sin an rud atá mise ag rá. Tá an táille seo iontach íseal ar fad - €50 ar shláinte na bpáistí, na ndaoine agus na timpeallachta. Chosnódh sé i bhfad níos mó don teaghlach dá...

Seanad: Water Services (Amendment) Bill 2011: Committee Stage (Resumed) (23 Nov 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: Tá brón orm.

Seanad: Water Services (Amendment) Bill 2011: Report and Final Stages (28 Nov 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: On one level, it may appear to be a good idea to have a waiver system, but I do not agree. The Oireachtas Library & Research Service states it is not clear whether the fees will even cover the cost of implementing the scheme. There is no extra money available. This morning I found in a press €50 that I did not know I had and I was elated. It is a lot of money, but, as I keep saying, a...

Seanad: Order of Business (7 Dec 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: I am pleased to say I have been informed by my colleague, Senator Ivana Bacik, that the Taoiseach has announced in the Dáil that he will postpone the proposed changes on the disability allowance and they will not be implemented in this budget. This is an example of the fairness of the budgetary process and shows that the Minister for Finance, Deputy Noonan, is true to his words. I also...

Seanad: Order of Business (13 Dec 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: I support Senator Darragh O'Brien in his call for a debate on education. There is no easy way to make cuts and if the Minister had not made the cuts mentioned, he would have had to make others. It is very important that we focus on education, including the quality of teaching and learning in schools, colleges and universities. It is one way to open a new future for young people.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Dec 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: I agree with Senator Darragh O'Brien on the need to promote education. The Seanad is the forum where we could do such a thing with the cross-party and independent unity Senator Norris mentioned. Today the ESRI has published a very significant report by researcher, Dr. Dorothy Watson. It shows that pupils who we might regard as being weaker pupils do not benefit from being streamed. They...

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Dec 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: The converse is that those of higher ability do not benefit from being in a streamed class with like pupils of higher ability. We are managing a flawed system where the outcomes show that it needs to be changed. It is deeply important because it goes to the core of education. Our focus should be on outcomes based on quality teaching and learning in our schools. We should have frequent...

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Dec 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: Chomh maith leis na Seanadóirí eile, ba mhaith liom beannachtaí na Nollag a ghuí ar gach Seanadóir, agus mo chomhgairdeas agus buíochas a ghabháil leat, a Chathaoirligh, as an obair iontach atá á dhéanmah agat sa Chathaoir. Ba mhaith liom dá ndéanfadh Seanadóirí smaoineamh i rith na Nollag ar an chinneadh atá déanta fáil réidh le scéim labhairt na Gaeilge. D'aontaigh...
