Seanad: Order of Business (12 Jul 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: I will not mention Sinn Féin for a long time to come, if Senator David Cullinane so touchy about it.

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Jul 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: That was a comment I wanted to make. As I would welcome a debate on Palestinian statehood, I would like the Leader to put the matter on the agenda of the House, in support of Senator Darragh O'Brien. I want a balanced debate, not a witch-hunt. For many years we have had pogroms in Limerick and the church praying for the conversion of the perfidious Jews who crucified the Saviour.

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Jul 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: I would welcome such a debate on Palestinian statehood.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Jul 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: I ask the Leader to convey our support to the Government. Senator Byrne asked why the welfare cuts were introduced in June. The reason is because we are bankrupt.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Jul 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: We received money under set conditions from the ECB and IMF. We have to report------

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Jul 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: We must report every two weeks to our economic masters. If Senators were listening to the vox-pop on "The John Murray Show" this morning, they would know we are bankrupt because of a corrupt set of chancers. I am not including current Members in this, but a fish rots from the head downwards. We must have change.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Jul 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: If the name is to be changed, I have a few ideas.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Jul 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: I have already asked it.

Seanad: Residential Institutions (Redress) Bill 2011: Second Stage (19 Jul 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: I welcome the Minister and thank him for introducing this Bill. As he stated, it facilitates the winding up of the Residential Institutions Redress Board. It also removes the board's power to consider applications made on or after 17 September 2011. I welcome the fact that Bill requires that the board must advertise this fact at least six weeks prior to 17 September next. Since the...

Seanad: Residential Institutions (Redress) Bill 2011: Second Stage (19 Jul 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: Now.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Jul 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: With regard to Senator O'Brien's comments on the so-called bailout - this is not a criticism - in my young days in Haggardstown a bailout was when one got £20 from a friend when one was stuck. When you gave it back two or three weeks later, you gave the friend £20 and not £26. Our so-called bailout is a stitch up. We must-----

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Jul 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: -----get the interest rate reduced. We must reduce it from 5.9% to the approximate cost of interest, which is 2.9%. That would be an assistance. Otherwise it is moral hazard. The European Union must face the fact that it is part of the moral hazard or there could be worse down the tracks for it if it does not support the countries. I congratulate Dundalk Outcomers - the organisation of...

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Jul 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: No, this is very important. I am addressing my remarks to the Leader. If we are to establish a true republic in the 21st century, we need to support and affirm diversity and more away from the closed society which has caused so many problems for our country. This organisation has asked me to pass on its members gratitude and admiration to the members of this Seanad who have supported...

Seanad: Agriculture and Fisheries: Statements, Questions and Answers (20 Jul 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: It is grossly unfair that some Members have been in three or four times and others have not spoken. It is a bad start. The same courtesy should be extended to everybody.

Seanad: Agriculture and Fisheries: Statements, Questions and Answers (20 Jul 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: That is not the point I am making.

Seanad: Agriculture and Fisheries: Statements, Questions and Answers (20 Jul 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: I apologise to the Minister. I understand that Chinese agents have been scouring the EU market for bacon to meet the increased demand in the next six months from China. Is the Minister happy with the level of pig stock in the country and that we have a robust supply to meet demand? Are pig producers being encouraged to produce when the factories are not releasing the price they will pay?

Seanad: SPHE Curriculum: Motion (20 Jul 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: My young son is going into sixth year and went to Oxygen a couple of weeks ago. My 13 year old daughter told him not to be silly and to wrap his sandwiches, although she did not use that word. I was very impressed by that. The programme in primary school and for junior cycle in secondary school in relationship and sexuality education is quite good, and I speak as a primary school...

Seanad: Electoral Amendment Bill 2011: Committee Stage (Resumed) (21 Jul 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: Senator Clune outlined briefly and clearly the need for the political reform currently going through. I would not describe it as piecemeal but rather a necessary first step. I agree with Senator Cullinane that we need to forge a new Republic. Our Taoiseach went a long way towards doing that yesterday and I commend him for it. As I said yesterday, I hope the Seanad can be a forum for, and...

Seanad: Order of Business. (26 Jul 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: With other Senators I wish to express to the Government of Norway my sympathy on the recent tragedy. I note the political parties there stated the answer is more openness. On this matter, I note what Senator Cullinane stated on the dangers of extremism. He is not here at present-----

Seanad: Order of Business. (26 Jul 2011)

Jim D'Arcy: This was a bit like Hannibal Lecter extolling the virtues of vegetarianism.
